Matiu Somes Island Lighthouse Model

This hand-painted model depicts the Matiu Somes Island lighthouse, a lighthouse operational since 1900.

The original Matiu Somes Island lighthouse, built in 1865, was the first inner harbour lighthouse in New Zealand. Eventually a stronger light was needed in the harbour so that it could see further out to sea.

In 1900 the new lighthouse was built. This lighthouse became fully automated in 1924, so no longer needed the use of a lighthouse keeper. This model depicts the current lighthouse that we see still in use on the island today.
