Iron Pyrite

Iron Pyrite is a lustrous stone that has often been mistaken for gold, but it is actually a type of iron mineral. Also known as fool’s gold, its colour is deceptively similar to that of a gold nugget.

The name comes from the Greek word pyr, “fire,” because pyrite emits sparks when struck by metal. Nodules of pyrite have been found in prehistoric burial mounds, which suggests their use as a means of producing fire.
