The Brothers Lighthouse Model
This hand-painted model depicts the original Brothers Islands' lighthouse located on the wild and windy western side of the Cook Strait.
This lighthouse is New Zealand’s only rock station. Situated on the larger of the two Brothers Islands, the lighthouse was first built in 1877. Lighthouse keepers on the island also gained the reputation of becoming 'rock happy' or suffering from 'rock madness' due to the isolated and desolate location.
The Brothers' lighthouse was the last in New Zealand to become automated in 1990. This ended a 151 year history of manned lighthouses in New Zealand.
